Highlights
The final CPI for August showed an unrevised 0.5 percent monthly rise that left annual inflation at July's 2.3 percent mark, equalling its highest outturn since January 2012.

The flash HICP was trimmed a tick to yield a final 0.5 percent monthly increase but the 12-month rate was also unrevised at 2.6 percent and so still matches July's final reading.

Steady yearly CPI inflation reflected unchanged rates in both manufacturing (minus 0.1 percent) and services (1.3 percent). Amongst the more volatile categories, food climbed from 1.9 percent to 2.2 percent but energy declined from 14.3 percent to 13.0 percent. As a result, core prices edged just 0.1 percent firmer on the month to leave the annual underlying rate at July's modest 0.9 percent.

There is little fresh news in today's inflation update. Core prices are still soft and what inflation there is remains concentrated in services. Prices in manufacturing remain ominously weak.

Definition
The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI represent the main rates of inflation. The national CPI is released alongside the HICP, Eurostat's harmonized measure of consumer prices. A flash estimate was released for the first time in January 2016 and is now published towards the end of each reference month.  Why Investors Care
