France : CPI
Released On 8/31/2018 2:45:00 AM For Aug(p), 2018
Month over Month-0.1 %0.5 %0.5 %
Year over Year2.3 %2.3 %2.3 %

Consumer prices provisionally rose at a 0.5 percent monthly rate in August. This left annual inflation at 2.3 percent and so equalled its highest mark since January 2012.

The flash HICP was up a larger 0.6 percent versus July but this too saw its 12-month change hold flat at 2.6 percent.

The stable annual CPI rate reflected faster inflation in food (2.1 percent after 1.9 percent) that was offset by a slowdown in energy (13.0 percent after 14.3 percent). Manufacturing prices were still 0.1 percent below their level a year ago while inflation in services was unchanged at 1.3 percent.

The flash results suggest little change in the core rate (annual 0.9 percent in July) and so reaffirm the ongoing underlying softness of consumer prices. Much the same should apply to the full Eurozone report due later this morning.

The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI represent the main rates of inflation. The national CPI is released alongside the HICP, Eurostat's harmonized measure of consumer prices. A flash estimate was released for the first time in January 2016 and is now published towards the end of each reference month.  Why Investors Care
