Switzerland : Producer and Import Price Index
Released On 8/14/2018 3:15:00 AM For Jul, 2018
M/M % change0.2 %0.1 %
Y/Y % change3.5 %3.6 %

The combined producer and import price index edged 0.1 percent firmer on the month in July. This nudged the annual inflation rate a tick higher to 3.6 percent, its fourth successive increase and its strongest reading since September 2008.

The overall monthly gain reflected a 0.2 percent rise in domestic producer prices and a 0.1 percent advance in import charges. Annual inflation for the former now stands at 2.1 percent, up from 1.9 percent in June, while at 6.9 percent, its import counterpart is a tick above its rate last time.

Within the PPI, petrol prices (1.5 percent) and furniture and other products (1.1 percent) recorded the most significant monthly gains while waste management (minus 0.6 percent) posted the only decline. The core PPI was 0.2 percent firmer than in June and 1.4 percent above its level a year ago. The main boost to import prices came from coal, crude oil and natural gas (5.3 percent) which alone more than accounted for the entire monthly rise.

The overall core index was up 0.1 percent from quarter-end and 2.0 percent higher on the year after a 1.9 percent increase last time. Underlying developments are moving in the right direction but will not be helped by the recent sharp appreciation of the CHF.

The producer price and import price index focuses on the actual prices of products on the market (transaction price) at the time of the order. The prices of domestic products are taken at the producer or factory level, excluding value added tax and consumption taxes. For imports, prices are collected at the Swiss border, without the value added tax, taxes on consumption and tariffs. Changes in the index provide a guide to inflation from the point of view of the product's producer/manufacturer  Why Investors Care
