Goods production (ex-construction) expanded in October, but only just. A 0.1 percent monthly rise followed a marginally smaller revised 0.1 percent drop in September and reduced workday adjusted annual growth from 1.4 percent to 1.0 percent.

As it is, October's monthly advance was decidedly lopsided with just the consumer goods subsector (1.3 percent) providing any boost. Capital goods (minus 0.1 percent) and intermediates (minus 0.3 percent) both suffered fresh setbacks and energy (minus 3.0 percent) also moved in the wrong direction.

The meagre increase in Italian goods production together with the sharp jump already reported in France should be enough to ensure a modest increase in their Eurozone counterpart (data due Wednesday). Nonetheless, manufacturing is struggling across the region and forward-looking indicators argue against any near-term pick-up. Indeed, according to the sector PMI survey, Italian output in November contracted at its fastest rate since April 2013.

Industrial production measures the physical output of the nation's factories, mines and utilities. Construction is excluded. Approximately 4,100 companies provide data on more than 8,000 monthly flows of production.  Why Investors Care
