Highlights
Goods production was weak in September. However, excluding construction, a monthly 0.2 percent decline did little to unwind August's unrevised 1.7 percent bounce and boosted workday adjusted annual growth from minus 0.8 percent to 1.3 percent, its first positive print since June.

September's fall was dominated by capital goods where output dropped 1.6 percent. However, both consumer goods (0.3 percent) and intermediates (1.1 percent) made ground while energy (minus 0.1 percent) was essentially flat.

Despite August's strength, falls in June and September left quarterly production 0.1 percent below its second quarter level so the sector had a small negative impact on the period's GDP growth. Ominously too, prospects for the fourth quarter do not look any better with the October manufacturing PMI pointing to the first outright decline in activity rates in more than two years. September Eurozone industrial production is due on Wednesday and the monthly decreases already reported in France (1.8 percent) and Germany (0.2 percent) combined with today's Italian update do not bode well.

Definition
Industrial production measures the physical output of the nation's factories, mines and utilities. Construction is excluded. Approximately 4,100 companies provide data on more than 8,000 monthly flows of production.  Why Investors Care
