Goods production was particularly weak in July. Following a smaller revised 0.3 percent monthly rise in June, output (ex-construction) collapsed fully 1.8 percent, its steepest decline since September 2017. Annual workday adjusted growth was minus 1.3 percent, down from 1.4 percent last time and the first negative print in years.

Weakness was broad-based with sizeable monthly decreases in consumer goods (1.7 percent), capital goods (2.2 percent) and intermediates (1.2 percent). Energy also contracted 0.8 percent. Overall industrial production in July was at its lowest level since May last year and some 1.4 percent below its average level in the second quarter. This means that August/September will need to show a decent rebound just to keep the third quarter flat.

To this end, the August manufacturing PMI (50.1) pointed to stagnant business activity and another drop in output so the omens are not good. Today's report also increases the likelihood of a renewed fall in July Eurozone industrial production, data due shortly.

Industrial production measures the physical output of the nation's factories, mines and utilities. Construction is excluded. Approximately 4,100 companies provide data on more than 8,000 monthly flows of production.  Why Investors Care
