Consumer prices provisionally rose 0.1 percent on the month in October. This put the annual inflation rate at 1.1 percent, up just a tick versus its final September mark but still its highest outturn since April. The results were in line with market expectations.

The flash HICP essentially followed suit with a 0.1 percent monthly increase that lifted its yearly rate from 1.1 percent to 1.2 percent.

The main boost to the change in the annual CPI rate came from food where inflation climbed 0.5 percentage points to 1.6 percent. Outside of energy (4.9 percent after 5.1 percent) most of the other major subsectors were broadly flat, suggesting that the core rate was also unmoved from its September print (0.5 percent), if not a little softer.

The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI represent the main rates of inflation. The national CPI is released alongside the HICP, Eurostat's harmonized measure of consumer prices. A flash estimate was released for the first time in January 2016 and is now published towards the end of each reference month.  Why Investors Care
