France : CPI
Released On 3/31/2017 2:45:00 AM For Mar(p), 2016
Month over Month0.1 %0.7 %0.6 %
Year over Year1.2 %1.2 %1.1 %

Consumer prices provisionally rose a slightly smaller than expected 0.6 percent on the month in March to reduce the annual inflation rate from 1.2 percent to 1.1 percent, its second successive decline.

The flash HICP was up a marginally firmer 0.7 percent versus February which was enough to hold its yearly rate steady at 1.4 percent.

The deceleration in annual CPI inflation was largely due to weakness amongst the more volatile basket components. In particular, the rate for fresh food slumped from 11.0 percent in mid-quarter to 4.5 percent while energy fell from 11.4 percent to 9.9 percent. Manufactured products saw its rate increase from minus 1.6 percent to minus 1.0 percent but services dipped a tick to 1.0 percent.

Overall the signs are that underlying trends remain generally flat and, more worryingly, still too soft for comfort.

The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI represent the main rates of inflation. The national CPI is released alongside the HICP, Eurostat's harmonized measure of consumer prices. A flash estimate was released for the first time in January 2016 and is now published towards the end of each reference month.  Why Investors Care
