Germany : CPI
Released On 7/13/2017 2:00:00 AM For Jun(f), 2017
Month over Month0.2 %0.2 %0.2 %
Year over Year1.6 %1.6 %1.6 %

Consumer prices were unrevised in the final report for June. A 0.2 percent monthly increase in the CPI saw annual inflation edge up from 1.5 percent in May to 1.6 percent, equalling the rate it posted in March.

The HICP was similarly unrevised and so still shows a 0.2 percent gain versus May and a 1.5 percent yearly rate, again, up just a tick from mid-quarter.

The minor rise in annual CPI inflation mainly reflected higher rates in leisure and entertainment (2.5 percent after 0.8 percent), and furniture and household appliances (0.4 percent after minus 0.1 percent). Food and non-alcoholic drinks (2.6 percent after 2.3 percent) and alcohol and tobacco (2.8 percent after 2.4 percent) also had a positive effect but energy (2.0 percent after 5.1 percent) acted as a partial brake.

Excluding energy, prices rose 0.3 percent on the month to lift the yearly core inflation rate by fully 0.4 percentage points to 1.8 percent. German inflation is rising in line with strengthening domestic demand and increasing pressure on capacity. Renewed weakness in the oil market will help to cap the overall CPI near-term but the ECB should be quite happy with recent developments in the core.

The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI provide widely used measures of inflation. A provisional estimate, with limited detail, is released about two weeks before the final data are reported.  Why Investors Care
