Highlights
Consumer prices provisionally edged up 0.1 percent on the month in April. This was in line with expectations and saw the annual inflation rate similarly move a tick firmer to 1.2 percent.

The flash HICP moved in tandem, also rising 0.1 percent versus March although this only left its yearly rate unchanged at 1.4 percent.

The gentle pick-up in the annual CPI rate was due to manufactured products where inflation climbed from minus 1.0 percent to minus 0.7 percent. Services (1.0 percent after 1.1 percent) and food (0.7 percent after 0.8 percent) moved the other way as did energy (9.3 percent after 9.9 percent).

The provisional data suggest a broadly flat trend in underlying inflation.

Definition
The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI represent the main rates of inflation. The national CPI is released alongside the HICP, Eurostat's harmonized measure of consumer prices. A flash estimate was released for the first time in January 2016 and is now published towards the end of each reference month.  Why Investors Care
