Germany : CPI
Released On 8/11/2017 2:00:00 AM For Jul(f), 2017
Month over Month0.4 %0.4 %0.4 %
Year over Year1.7 %1.7 %1.7 %

There were no revisions to the provisional CPI figures for July. A 0.4 percent monthly increase in prices put the annual inflation rate at 1.7 percent, up a tick from its final June mark and at its highest level since April.

The final HICP similarly matched its flash estimate and so still shows a 0.4 percent rise on the month and a 1.5 percent yearly rate, unchanged from its final June outturn.

The monthly increase in the CPI was boosted by the usual seasonal holiday effects and to this end, holiday costs were up fully 14.7 percent. Otherwise prices were quite mixed with clothing and footwear down 3.7 percent but food up 0.3 percent alongside restaurants and hotels. Energy was just 0.1 percent firmer on the month (and 0.7 percent on the year). Excluding food and energy, the CPI gained 0.3 percent versus June and 1.7 percent from a year ago, a 0.1 percentage point increase compared with the June rate.

The final July data suggest that underlying prices are gradually rising on the back of increasing capacity pressures in both the goods producing and service sectors. The ECB should be pleased.

The consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers. Monthly and annual changes in the CPI provide widely used measures of inflation. A provisional estimate, with limited detail, is released about two weeks before the final data are reported.  Why Investors Care
